Susan Elizabeth Norris Moon (born March 7, 1945 in McAllen , Texas ) is an American science fiction and fantasy author.

Life

Elizabeth Moon was born in McAllen, a town near the Mexican border. She received a BA in History from Rice University in 1968 . Between 1968 and 1971 she was with the United States Marine Corps , where she claims to have dealt with computers, and achieved the rank of First Lieutenant there . After completing her military service, she went on to study and obtained a BA in biology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1975 .

She has been married to Richard Sloan Moon since 1969, a fellow student from Rice University and later an army officer. The two moved to a small town north of Austin in 1979 and still live there today. Their son Michael, who suffers from autism, was born there in 1983 .

Works (selection)

Elizabeth Moon wrote her first stories and poems as a young child. But she didn't really start writing until she was in her mid-thirties. Her first sold short stories, "Bargains" and "ABCs in Zero-G", were published in 1986. Her first novel Sheepfarmer's Daughter , the start of a fantasy trilogy, came out in 1988. For this debut she was honored in 1989 by the Baltimore Science Fiction Society with the Compton Crook Award . Internationally, she achieved her first reputation with the 1997 Hugo Award nominated novel Remnant Population (German: The Last Settler ). The final international breakthrough came in 2004 when he won the Nebula Award for her novel The Speed of Dark (German: The speed of darkness ), a gambling in the near future story, told from the viewpoint of an autistic computer programmer's to to it by the Her son's illness was inspired.
