The shaggy hawkweed ( Hieracium villosum ) is a species of the hawkweed genus ( Hieracium ).

description

The herbaceous perennial plant reaches heights of between 10 and 40 centimeters. The white shaggy hair is striking, the hair can be three to 10 millimeters long. The tongue-shaped basal leaves are arranged in rosettes and have almost entire margins. The stem leaves are sessile or half encompassing the stem.

The stem is simple or forked with one to four flower heads. In the flower heads there are many yellow five-lobed ray- flowers , which are often ciliate on the outside of the teeth.

Flowering time is from July to August.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 27 or 36.

Occurrence

The limestone plant species prefers dry grasslands , rubble and stone corridors or bare rocks. This species can be found in the mountains of eastern Central Europe as well as in southern Europe at altitudes between 1100 and 2700 meters above sea ​​level . In the Allgäu Alps, it rises to the Rotgundspitze in Bavaria up to 2300 m above sea level. It is a character species of the Seslerio-Caricetum sempervirentis from the Seslerion association, but occurs less often in societies of the Caricion ferrugineae association.
