Werner Greuter

Werner Rodolfo Greuter (born February 27, 1938 in Genoa ) is a Swiss botanist . His main research interests are the Mediterranean flora and that of the Caribbean. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Greuter ".

Live and act

After schools in Bellinzona and Winterthur , he attended the University of Zurich , where he received his doctorate in 1972 . From 1965 he worked at the Botanical Garden of the City of Geneva , where he stayed until 1978. From 1972 to 1974 he was Scientific Director at the Goulandris Museum of Natural History in Kifisia , and in 1975 he completed his habilitation at the University of Geneva . From 1978 to 2008 (provisional since 2004) Greuter was director of the Botanical Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem . At the Tokyo Code (1994) and the St. Louis Code (2000) he was chairman of the editorial committee of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN), of which he had previously belonged.

Much of his work revolved around the flora of Greek islands, especially the southern Aegean ( Psara , Kythera , Crete ). He is the author of the "Med-Checklist", a catalog for checking the names and distribution of all species in the enlarged Mediterranean. Volumes 1 to 4 are published, a continuation is "Euro + Med Checklist - The Euro + Med Plantbase Project" which also includes all European species.

Greuter is a member of numerous botanical societies, including the Linnean Society of London and the International Association for Plant Taxonomy . He is co-founder of the company OPTIMA ( O rganization for the P hyto- T axonomic I nvestigation of the M editerranean A rea), in which the interested in exploring the Mediterranean flora botanists are united. He is co-editor of the Flora of Southern Africa , the Flora de la República de Cuba and numerous botanical journals such as the Candollea and Willdenowia .

Honors

Numerous species are named after Greuter, for example Silene greuteri Phitos and Epipactis greuteri H. Baumann & Künkele . Also the genus Greuteria Amirahm newly described in 2013 . & Kaz.Osaloo from the legume family (Fabaceae) is named after him.
