The International Association for Plant Taxonomy ( IAPT ) promotes agreements on plant biodiversity , institutionalizes the international communication of research among botanists, and looks after issues relating to the uniformity and stability of plant names . The IAPT was founded on July 18, 1950 at the 7th International Botanical Congress in Stockholm . It is currently based in Bratislava . Patrick S. Herendeen from the Chicago Botanic Garden has been its President, Gonzalo Nieto Feliner from the Real Jardín Botánico de Madrid its Vice-President and Karol Marhold from the Centrum biológie rastlín a biodiverzity of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava its Secretary General since 2017 .

Both the taxonomic journal Taxon and the Regnum Vegetabile series are published by the IAPT. The latter includes the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants , the Index Nominum Genericorum and the Index Herbariorum .

target

The primary goal of the IAPT is to promote and understand biodiversity - the discovery, naming, classification and systematics - of both living and fossil plants . In addition, it promotes the study and conservation of plant biodiversity and works to raise the general public's attention to these areas. The organization institutionalizes the international cooperation of botanists who work in the fields of plant systematics, taxonomy and nomenclature. This is achieved in part through support for meetings and source publications in reference publications and journals.

"IAPT was founded in 1950 as a not-for-profit organization for the purposes of publication of a periodical ( Taxon ) dealing with activities of the association and with objects of general importance for plant taxonomy, the publication of books and indices of utility for plant taxonomists ( Regnum Vegetabile ), the establishment and maintenance of committees for specific taxonomic and nomenclatural purposes, and the organization of international symposia on problems of plant systematics. "
"The IAPT was founded in 1950 as a non-profit organization with the aim of publishing a journal ( Taxon ) dealing with the activities of the association and with questions of general relevance to plant taxonomy, the publication of books and indices for use by plant- Taxonomists ( Regnum Vegetabile ), the establishment and maintenance of committees for special taxonomic and nomenclature purposes and the organization of international symposia on problems of plant systematics. "

The IAPT also strives to achieve consistency and stability in botanical names . It achieves this through the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi and plants , the earlier than International Code of Botanical Nomenclature ( English International Code of Botanical Nomenclature ) was called, and the supervision of the International Bureau for Plant Taxonomy and Nomenclature .

Publications and online sources

The association's official journal is Taxon , the only medium for suggesting the preservation or rejection of names and for suggestions for names to be included in the International Code .

Regnum Vegetable

The Regnum Vegetabile is a series of books with topics of interest to plant taxonomists. Many of the volumes are literature reviews or monographs from the field of plant systematics. There are several volumes that are in common use:

  • The International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (Volume 159, 2018, ICN ), a collection of rules and recommendations for assigning formal plant names. The current edition is the "Shenzhen Code", which was developed in 2017 at the 18th International Botanical Congress in Shenzhen (China).
  • The International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (ICNCP), 8th edition (Volume 151, 2010), a supplement to the ICN with the continuation of the set of rules with regard to cultivated plants .
  • The index Nominum Genericorum (volumes 100-102 & 113), an index of all published generic names covered by the ICN , including the place of publication and information about the type species . The index is produced in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution and is also available online.
  • The Index Herbariorum (the first six editions appeared in volumes 15, 31, 86, 92, 93, 106, 109, 114, 117 and 120), a directory or guide to the herbaria of the world, including contact information, list of abbreviations and important collections contained in each herbarium. Today, the Herbariorum Index is an online database operated by the New York Botanical Garden and made available for online search.
  • The International Directory of Botanical Gardens (republished as Volume 95, 1977), a directory of the world's botanical gardens and arboretums .

The series also contains many volumes which are of particular interest to specialists in sub-disciplines of botany and which complement the above.

Databases

In addition to the electronic versions of the printed works of the IAPT entertains "Aktuell names used" ( English "Names in Current Use" ), a database of scientific names of recent genera.

Prices

The IAPT created in 1986 in honor of Adolf Engler two Engler medals ( English Engler medals ): The Engler Medal in Gold features all six years extraordinary contributions to plant taxonomy in the life's work of botanists and is since 1987 when each held International Botanical Congress ( IBC) awarded; The Engler Medal in Silver (Medaille sensu lato ) was awarded from 1987 to 2001 for a monograph or other work on botanical systematics and from 1990 to 2002 for various meetings, congresses, symposia, etc. The latter was divided into three prizes for extraordinary publications in these areas in 2002: The Engler Medal in Silver (Medaille sensu stricto ) was awarded for monographic or floristic plant classification; the Stafleu Medal for historical, biographical and / or nomenclature aspects of the plant classification; and the Stebbins Medal for phylogenetic plant systematics and / or the evolution of plants. The medals honor Adolf Engler (March 24, 1844 - October 10, 1930), Frans Antonie Stafleu (September 8, 1921 - December 16, 1997) and George Ledyard Stebbins, Jr. (January 6, 1906 - January 19, 2000).
