history

John McAllen founded West McAllen in 1904 in what is now the city of West. In 1905 a connection was made with the St. Louis Brownsville & Mexico Railroad . In 1907 the city of East McAllen was founded. When the cities merged in 1910, some shops, churches and residences were built. There was also a newspaper now.

In 1920 the city had over 5300 inhabitants. The city grew steadily and by 1960 already had 32,728 inhabitants. In the 1960s, the population did not grow as fast. A new town hall was built for this purpose, the library was enlarged and a museum opened. From 1970 to 1980 the population doubled. Now the city had 66,281 inhabitants. In 1976 the La Plaza Mall was opened. This is the largest shopping mall in the McAllen-Edinburg-Mission metropolitan area.
