Irapuato is a city in the Mexican state of Guanajuato . It was founded in 1547 and is 1724 meters above sea level . Its indigenous name comes from Taraskan and means "swampy place". Irapuato is the administrative seat of the Municipio Irapuato .
One of the first boarding schools for girls in Mexico was established in Irapuato in the 18th century. Today the city is an important industrial and commercial center. Irapuato is also located in an important agricultural region. The city with around 380,000 inhabitants is known nationwide for the strawberries that grow in its region. There is also a strawberry in the coat of arms of their sporty figurehead, the CD Irapuato football club . The club's nicknames, "Freseros" (strawberry boys) and "Trinca Fresera" (strawberry gang), allude to this.
