The Roman Catholic Diocese of Campeche ( lat. : Dioecesis Campecorensis , span. : Diócesis de Campeche ) is in Mexico located Roman Catholic diocese based in Campeche .

history

The diocese of Campeche was on March 24, 1895 by Pope Leo XIII. built with the Apostolic Constitution Praedecessorum nostrorum from cessions of territory of the Yucatán diocese . It was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Yucatán as a suffragan . Campeche is considered the starting point for the Christianization of the American mainland in the 16th century. On March 23, 1516, the first Christian worship service on the American continent was celebrated there, as a stone slab in front of the San Francisco Church commemorates today.
