The Archdiocese of Antequera was on June 21, 1535 by Pope Paul III. from the cession of territory by the diocese of Tlaxcala established as the diocese of Antequera and subordinated to the archbishopric of Seville as a suffragan . On March 19, 1539, the Antequera diocese gave parts of its territory to establish the Chiapas diocese . The diocese of Antequera was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Mexico City as a suffragan on February 12, 1546 . On March 19, 1863, the Antequera diocese gave parts of its territory to establish the Veracruz-Jalapa diocese . Another assignment of territory took place on June 23, 1891 to establish the diocese of Tehuantepec .

On June 23, 1891, the diocese of Antequera was by Pope Leo XIII. raised to the archbishopric. The Archdiocese of Antequera gave up parts of its territory on April 25, 1902 to establish the Diocese of Mixtecas . Further territorial concessions were made on 13 January 1962 on the establishment of the Apostolic Constitution Quem ad modum erected Diocese of Tehuacan , and on October 8, 1972 on establishment of the Apostolic Constitution ad bonum animorum established territorial prelate Huautla . The Archdiocese of Antequera was on 8 November 2003 part of its territory to the founding of the Apostolic Constitution date A Deo erected Diocese of Puerto Escondido from.
