Ernesto Corripio y Ahumada
Ernesto Cardinal Corripio y Ahumada (born June 29, 1919 in Tampico , Mexico , † April 10, 2008 in Mexico ) was Archbishop of Mexico City .
Life
Ernesto Corripio Ahumada entered the Seminario Palafoxiano of Puebla de Los Ángeles at the age of eleven . There he received a humanistic and philosophical school education. In 1935 his bishop sent him to study Catholic theology at the Pontifical Latin American College "Pius" in Rome , in 1937 he completed his philosophical studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University , where he obtained three doctorates in the following years. He received his doctorate in Catholic theology in 1942, in canon law in 1944 and in church history in 1945 .
On October 25, 1942, he received the sacrament of ordination by the auxiliary bishop in Rome and later Cardinal Luigi Traglia . He then worked as a pastor in Rome. In 1945 he returned to Mexico and worked in his hometown of Tampico as a pastor and in training for priests.
On December 27, 1952, Pope Pius XII appointed him . the titular bishop of Zapara and auxiliary bishop in Ciudad Victoria Tamaulipas . The episcopal ordination received his Octaviano Márquez y Toriz , Archbishop of los Ángeles de Puebla , on 19 March of the following year; Co- consecrators were Serafín María Armora y González , Bishop of Ciudad Victoria-Tamaulipas, and Luis Guízar y Barragán , Bishop of Saltillo .
On February 25, 1956, he was appointed bishop of Ciudad Victoria-Tamaulipas . Pope Paul VI appointed him on July 25, 1967 Archbishop of Antequera ( Oaxaca de Juárez ). On March 11, 1976 Corripio Ahumada was appointed Archbishop of Puebla de los Ángeles and on July 19 of the following year Archbishop of Mexico City , which he remained until his retirement on September 29, 1994. As a result, he headed the Archdiocese as Apostolic Administrator until June 13, 1995.
Pope John Paul II accepted him on June 30, 1979 as a cardinal priest with the titular Church Immacolata al Tiburtino in the college of cardinals .
Cardinal Corripio died in 2008 after heart problems, thrombosis and diabetes. He was buried in the Mexico City Cathedral on the Zócalo.
Act
It is thanks to Ernesto Corripio that in 1992 the decades-long conflict between the anti-clerical Mexican regime and the Vatican ended and diplomatic relations were restored.
He was three times chairman of the Mexican Bishops' Conference . He was also an advisor to the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples in Rome. In addition to many other duties, he was active in the Pontifical Commission for Latin America . He was considered an archbishop loyal to the Pope; During his tenure, John Paul II visited Mexico in 1979 and May 1990.
