Arturo Antonio Szymanski Ramírez

Arturo Antonio Szymanski Ramírez (born January 17, 1922 in Tampico ; † May 29, 2018 ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman and Archbishop of San Luis Potosí . He was one of the most important figures in the Church in Mexico.

Life

Arturo Antonio Szymanski Ramírez, son of a Polish father and a Mexican mother, studied philosophy and theology at the San Luis Potosí seminary and the Montezuma seminary, which trained Mexican students in the United States, and canon law at the University of Washington. He was ordained a priest on March 22, 1947 and was a teacher of Latin, English and Greek at the seminary of Tamaulipas, later he also taught philosophy, theology and canon law. Most recently he was rector of the seminary and diocesan judge.

Pope John XXIII appointed him on April 20, 1960 titular bishop of Cerasus and coadjutor bishop with the right to succeed San Andrés Tuxtla . The Bishop of Tampico , Ernesto Corripio y Ahumada , ordained him episcopally on June 21 of the same year . Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Chilapa , Fidel Cortés Pérez , and the Bishop of Matamoros , Estanislao Alcaraz y Figueroa . After the death of Jesús Villareal y Fierros on March 21, 1965, he succeeded him as Bishop of San Andrés Tuxtla.

He participated in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council as a council father. During the second session he sat next to Stefan Wyszyński and met Karol Józef Wojtyla , who later became Pope John Paul II , in October 1962 ; both maintained a friendship until the end of John Paul II's life.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on August 13, 1968 Bishop of Tampico . On January 27, 1987, he was appointed Bishop of San Luis Potosí by Pope John Paul II . After being raised to the archbishopric , he became the first archbishop of San Luis Potosí on November 5 of the next year. On January 20, 1999, John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.
