Luis Morales Reyes
Luis Morales Reyes (born July 5, 1936 in Churumuco ) is a Mexican clergyman and retired Archbishop of San Luis Potosí . From 1997 to 2003 he was President of the Mexican Bishops' Conference .
Life
Luis Morales Reyes graduated from the Pontifical Gregorian University with a degree in philosophy and theology. He was ordained a priest for the diocese of Tacámbaro on December 2, 1962 and worked there as an advisor to the Christian family movement. Morales later belonged to the pastoral council of the diocese.
Pope Paul VI appointed him on March 8, 1976 auxiliary bishop in Tacámbaro and titular bishop of Burca . The Bishop of Tacámbaro, José Abraham Martínez Betancourt , donated him episcopal ordination on May 4th of the same year ; Co-consecrators were Mario Pio Gaspari , Apostolic Delegate in Mexico , and Gilberto Valbuena Sánchez , Vicar Apostolic of La Paz en la Baja California Sur . From 1983 to 1985 he was a member of the Commission for the Clergy in the Mexican Bishops 'Conference before he was Treasurer of the Bishops' Conference until 1991.
Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Tacámbaro on June 5, 1979. On February 19, 1985, he was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Torreón , and on April 20 of the same year he was introduced to the office. After Fernando Romo Gutiérrez 's retirement , he succeeded him on June 27, 1990 as Bishop of Torreón. In 1996 he succeeded the late Manuel Pérez-Gil y González as Vice President of the Mexican Bishops' Conference, and in 1997 and 2000 he was elected President for a term of three years each. On January 20, 1999, he was named Archbishop of San Luis Potosí , and on March 18 of the same year he was introduced to the office.
On April 3, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI. the resignation put forward by Luis Morales Reyes for reasons of age.
