The previous participants of Division I-AA, Illinois State, Indiana State and Southern Illinois joined Eastern Illinois, Northern Iowa, Southwest Missouri State and Western Illinois and formed the Association of Mid-Continent Universities , today's Summit League , for everyone Sports other than football. Your football departments joined the Gateway Collegiate Athletic Conference , which was previously an all-women league.

In 1992, when the Gateway Collegiate Athletic Conference joined the MVC, the football league remained independent, changing its name to Gateway Football Conference. After several membership changes, the current name Missouri Valley Football Conference was finally adopted in 2008 . Most recently, on November 4, 2010, the University of South Dakota was invited as the 10th member to join the league. They will take part for the first time in the 2012 season.
