Carbondale is the largest city (with the status " City ") in Jackson County in the south of the US -amerikanischen state of Illinois . According to the United States Census 2010 , Carbondale has a population of about 25,900.
The Southern Illinois University Carbondale is a state university in the city. It was founded here in 1874 and has its main campus here .

Carbondale's geographic coordinates are 37 ° 44 ' N , 89 ° 13' W (37.726418, −89.220270). The city is located in the catchment area of the Big Muddy River , 126 m above sea level, in the center of the coal mining areas of southern Illinois. According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 31.4 km 2 , of which 30.8 km 2 is land and 0.6 km 2 (= 2.06%) is water.
There are several small rivers in the city, including the Piles Fork in the east and Little Crab Orchard Creek in the west of the city.

The Illinois State Route 13 leads as Main Street in east-west direction through Carbondale. It is intersected downtown by US Highway 51 , which runs south to north as Illinois Avenue . Both streets are one-way in the center, so Route 13 runs east on Walnut Street and US-51 runs south on University Avenue . All other roads are county roads, further subordinate and partly unpaved roads or inner-city connecting roads.
A railway line of the former Illinois Central Railroad , which is now part of the Canadian National Railway , has run parallel to Highway 51 since 1854 . This route is also used by Amtrak . This national rail service provider connects Carbondale with Chicago via three daily connections in both directions . Another daily train connection goes to Memphis and New Orleans . Amtrak train 59, the southbound City of New Orleans runs from Carbondale to Memphis, Jackson and New Orleans, in the opposite direction takes train 58 via Centralia , Effingham, Mattoon, Champaign-Urbana , Kankakee, Homewood to Chicago Union Station . Carbondale and Chicago are also connected by train pairs 390/391, Saluki , in the morning and 392/393, Illinois , in the afternoon. Both pairs of trains end or begin in Carbondale.
The city is about 20 km from Williamson County Regional Airport , from which a commercial operator offers flights to St. Louis , Missouri four times a day . The Southern Illinois Airport is located directly northwest of the city and serves private planes, the university and the local hospital.
history
The city was founded in 1852. The name goes back to the suggestion of one of the founders; Daniel H. Brush suggested naming the town Carbondale because it was located in a coal mining area. The post office opened on February 27, 1854. In 1869 Carbondale was incorporated as a Village, four years later Carbondale received a new charter as a City.

12.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 80.3 percent were between 18 and 64 and 7.4 percent were 65 years or older. 46.9 percent of the population was female.
