The Southern Illinois Airport ( IATA : MDH , ICAO : KMDH ) is an airport located in Jackson County in the south of the US -amerikanischen state of Illinois . It is located 8 km northwest of Carbondale and 8.3 km east of Murphysboro , the administrative seat of Jackson County. The airport is owned by the Southern Illinois Airport Authority , a joint venture between the cities of Carbondale and Murphysboro and Jackson County. The airport is used for general aviation in southern Illinois.

Southern Illinois Airport is right on the south bank of the Big Muddy River . The airport can be reached via US Highway 51 and Illinois State Route 13 .
