The Big Muddy River flows through the south of the US -amerikanischen state of Illinois . It rises near Kell in Marion County and flows into the Mississippi River after 267 km below Murphysboro in Jackson County .

Not far from Benton , the Big Muddy River is dammed into Rand Lake .

The name Big Muddy River (literally: "Big Mud River ") refers to the muddy bottom on most of its course.

The river is not to be confused with the Missouri River , which is popularly called the Big Muddy .
