The county is located in southern Illinois on the Mississippi River , which forms the border with the neighboring state of Missouri to the west . A. Jackson

Jackson County was formed on January 10, 1816 in what was then the Territory of Illinois and is one of the original counties, although it was formerly formed from Randolph County. The counties that existed at the transition from the territory to the state are named as Original Counties . It was named after Andrew Jackson (1767-1845), the 7th President of the USA (1829-1837), who had defeated the British Army in the Battle of New Orleans at that time .

On March 18, 1925, Gorham, DeSoto and Murphysboro were badly damaged by a tornado. The district court building, which is still in use today, was built in 1827-28.
