The Elk Township is about 50 km east of the Mississippi , which forms the border with Missouri . The mouth of the Ohio at the intersection of the states of Illinois, Missouri and Kentucky is about 130 km south.
The Elk Township is located at 37 ° 54'11 "north latitude and 89 ° 12'19" west longitude and extends over 96.46 km², which is spread over 93.76 km² of land and 2.7 km² of water. The Little Muddy River flows through the township .
The Elk Township is located in the extreme northeast of Jackson County and is bordered to the north by Perry County , to the east by Franklin County and to the southeast by Williamson County . Within Jackson County, Elk Township borders Vergennes Township in the east, Somerset Township in the southeast and De Soto Township in the south .
