The DeSoto Township is one of 16 townships in Jackson County in the southwest of the US -amerikanischen state of Illinois . In 2010 De Soto Township had 2388 inhabitants.

De Soto Township is located around 35 km east of the Mississippi , which forms the border with Missouri . The mouth of the Ohio at the intersection of the states of Illinois, Missouri and Kentucky is about 100 km south.

The De Soto Township is located at 37 ° 49'02 "north latitude and 89 ° 13'47" west longitude and extends over 98.38 km², which is spread over 97.22 km² of land and 1.16 km² of water. Within the township, the Little Muddy flows into the Big Muddy River , a left tributary of the Mississippi.

The De Soto Township is located in the east of Jackson County and is bordered to the northeast by Franklin and to the east by Williamson County . Within Jackson County, De Soto Township borders on Carbondale Township in the south, Murphysboro Township in the south-west, Somerset Township in the west, Vergennes Township in the north-west and Elk Township in the north .

In the center of De Soto Township, US Highway 51, which runs in a north-south direction, crosses Illinois State Route 149, which runs from west to east . All other roads are county roads or further subordinate and partly unpaved roads.

Parallel to Highway 51 runs a railway line of the former Illinois Central Railroad , which is now part of the Canadian National Railway . This route is also used by Amtrak . In the middle of the township, the route is crossed by a line of the Union Pacific Railroad .

With the Southern Illinois Airport there is a regional airport on the southwestern edge of De Soto Township. The nearest major airport is Lambert-Saint Louis International Airport (around 170 km northwest).

According to the 2010 census , there were 2,388 people in 986 households in De Soto Township. The population density was 24.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.36 people lived in each of the 986 households.
