The Somerset Township is one of 16 townships in Jackson County in the southwest of the US -amerikanischen state of Illinois . In 2010 Somerset Township had 4205 inhabitants.

Somerset Township is around 30 km east of the Mississippi , which forms the border with Missouri . The mouth of the Ohio at the intersection of the states of Illinois, Missouri and Kentucky is about 100 km south.

The Somerset Township is located at 37 ° 49 '  N , 89 ° 19'  W and extends over 97.63 km². The Big Muddy River flows through the southeast of the township .

Somerset Township is located in the north-eastern center of Jackson County and borders on Vergennes Township in the north, Elk Township in the northeast, De Soto Township in the east, Carbondale Township in the south-east, Murphysboro Township in the south-west to the Sand Ridge Township , to the west to the Levan Township and to the northwest to the Ora Township .

Illinois State Routes 13 , 127, and 149 meet in Somerset Township . All other roads are county roads or further subordinate and partly unpaved roads.

A Union Pacific Railroad line runs through the southeast of the township .

With the Southern Illinois Airport is located about one kilometer southeast of the edge of Somerset Township, a regional airport. The nearest major airport is Lambert-Saint Louis International Airport (around 155 km northwest).
