The Fountain Bluff Township is located on the Mississippi , which forms the border with Missouri . The mouth of the Ohio at the intersection of the states of Illinois, Missouri and Kentucky is about 105 km south.
The Fountain Bluff Township is located at 37 ° 45 ' N , 89 ° 32' W and extends over 80.73 km², which is spread over 80.73 km² of land and 3.05 km² of water.
The township is located in the west of Jackson County and bordered by the Mississippi in the southwest on Perry County in Missouri. Within Jackson County, Fountain Bluff Township is bordered by Degognia Township to the west and northwest , Kinkaid Township to the north, Levan Township to the northeast, Sand Ridge Township to the east and Grand Tower Township to the southeast .

Through the northeast of the Township herein the Illinois portion extending along the Mississippi Great River Road forming Illinois State Route 3 . All other roads are county roads or further subordinate and partly unpaved roads.
A Union Pacific Railroad line runs parallel to Illinois State Route 3 .
