The Great River Road is a compilation of US Highways , State Routes and County Roads that run continuously along both banks of the Mississippi . The Great River Road runs through the ten US -amerikanischen states of Louisiana , Mississippi , Arkansas , Tennessee , Kentucky , Missouri , Illinois , Iowa , Wisconsin and Minnesota along the Mississippi and is also up in the two Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Ontario have been extended.

Although there are actually several roads, it forms a coherent, continuous system in the USA and Canada, but also in every state or province. The continuous connection is less of interest in terms of traffic engineering, but serves primarily for tourist and historical use. Many neighboring countries have developed a number of attractions along the road and use the Great River Road to connect them.

The Great River Road is a National Scenic Byway and, with the exception of Arkansas, always runs along both banks of the river. Extensions to Canada begin in Minnesota at Lake Itasca and Bemidji and branch out to Winnipeg , Minaki, Ontario and Dryden, Ontario .

The Great River Road was established in 1938 and has its own commission in each state. These work together in the Mississippi Parkway Commission (MRPC) . The entire 3765 km long route is continuously marked with green and white signs, on which a typical Mississippi steamer can be seen. Below that is the name of the respective state or province. The MRPC publications speak of the connection "Canada to Gulf" and consequently the course of the route from the beginning in Ontario to the end in Venice , Louisiana.
