Founded in 1832 by James Mason , Grafton is Jersey County's oldest town. The area, described in 1834 as follows: "... a post office, a general store, an inn and a few families ..." was first settled in 1812 when a small fortified post was built at the mouth of the Illinois River has been.

The population of the place grew, reaching almost 10,000 by 1850. Many people found work in the quarries, boatyards and fishing.
