Metro East is a region in the west of the US -amerikanischen State of Illinois , the eastern part of the metropolitan region of Greater St. Louis to the city of St. Louis in Missouri includes. The region comprises five counties in their entirety and parts of three others.

The largest city in the region is Belleville . Metro-East is the second largest metropolitan area in Illinois after the Chicago metropolitan area.

The Metro-East region is the part of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area east of the Mississippi in Illinois. It includes the following counties:

Demographic data

At the 2000 census , the five counties that are entirely in the Metro-East region had a total of 599,845 inhabitants. These were distributed over 229,888 households in 160,260 families.

The most widely spoken language is English . In the southwest of Madison County, in Clinton County, in the south and east of St. Clair County, and especially in Monroe County, there are German-speaking residents. Mostly Spanish is spoken in Fairmont City , St. Clair County and parts of Clinton County. The west of Granite City , Madison and Venice in Madison County and East St. Louis and Washington Park in St. Clair County are predominantly inhabited by African Americans .

Rail transport

The St. Louis area, particularly the city of East St. Louis, has historically been one of the largest railroad hubs in the country. Even today, a number of railway lines for freight (e.g. CSX , BNSF ) and passenger (e.g. Amtrak ) meet in the region.

Local public transport in the St. Louis region is largely taken over by the rapid transit system known as MetroLink .
