history

Waterloo's history dates back to the 1780s when settlers established the first permanent settlement in all of the Northwest Territory . This settlement was given the French name Bellfontaine after the spring that served as a resting place for travelers between the French settlements of Cahokia and Kaskaskia . The settlement grew and around 1800 the population had grown to 286.

In 1816 a man named Emery Peters Rogers arrived in the area and four years later opened a shop, mill, and quarry. The area surrounding his shop was soon named Peterstown .

In the process, two parts of the settlement formed, Bellfontaine on the south side and Peterstown in the north of a creek , in which an intense rivalry between the two parts developed.

According to legend, an Irishman named Charles Carroll arrived in 1818 and to everyone's amazement he ignored this rivalry between Peterstown and Bellfontainer. With the words "It will not be Bellfontaine and it will not be Peterstown, but begorra , I will prepare your two of you your Waterloo" built his house on one side of the river and his stable on the other. He was referring to the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.

In the 1840s, the city saw significant population growth, mainly due to immigrants of German origin.

Waterloo was founded as a city on February 12, 1849. The charter was expanded in 1857 and 1859. On August 29, 1888, Waterloo was made a city.

Waterloo became the county seat of Monroe County in 1825. On December 1, 1978, the historic center was recognized as a monument and entered on the National Register of Historic Places .
