Sauget is a town in St. Clair County in the US state of Illinois . It is located in the Greater St. Louis region . According to the 2010 census , Sauget had 159 inhabitants.

History and economy

Sauget was founded as Monsanto in 1926 . It was intended to serve as a low-tax dumping ground for Monsanto chemical plants. In honor of its first local president Leo Sauget it was renamed after him.

The American Bottoms Treatment Plant , a sewage treatment plant for the Illinois flank of the Greater St. Louis region, and several industrial wastewater plants are located in Sauget .

Before polychlorinated biphenyls were banned in the US, the Monsanto factory in Sauget made them. The production site is now a so-called superfund site , a contaminated site that requires sustainable environmental remediation.

In 2010 the village was home to a total of 59 commercial operations, including a larger company for the production of rubber and plastic seals and some small businesses such as lottery sales or strip clubs, but there are no supermarkets or schools.

Sauget has a fire brigade with 16 members and a police station with 16 members. There is a city water and sewage service.

According to a 2000 census, there were 249 people in 101 households and 61 families in the village. The population density consisted of 23.3 people per square kilometer. There were 115 housing units. The population was 70.28 percent white, 27.71 percent African American and 1.2 percent Asian. Latin Americans made up 0.80 percent of the population.

There were 101 households, 27.7 percent had children under the age of 18 and 36.6 percent were married couples. 10.9 percent of households were made up of people living alone aged 65 or over. On average, 2.47 people lived in one household - in a family it was around 3.05.

On average, people lived to be around 36 years old. 23.7 percent of the population were under 18 years of age, 10 percent were between 18 and 24 years of age, 32.5 percent were between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.9 percent were between 45 and 64 years of age and 10.8 were 65 years of age or older . The population consisted of 45 percent men and 55 percent women.

Sports

The village has a basketball team of the Frontier League , which Gateway Grizzlies call.

Pop Culture

In the song I Can not Stand LA by Bowling for Soup Sauget is mentioned. The band demands in the song that Sauget should belong to St. Louis.
