Bowling for Soup is an American punk rock band from Wichita Falls , Texas .

The band name

The band name goes back to a 1978 sketch by US comedian Steve Martin ( Bowling for shit ), who in turn was a parody of the US game show Bowling for Dollars . Since keeping the expletive phrase shit in the band name would have resulted in far-reaching public ostracism in the US today, it was replaced by the harmless word soup .

Musical direction

All previously released albums by the group Bowling for Soup can basically be assigned to the genre of punk rock ; in particular the subgenre of melodically and rhythmically catchy pop-punk .

Career

Bowling for Soup was founded in 1994 in Wichita Falls , Texas, with singer Jaret Reddick, bassist Erik Chandler, lead guitarist Chris Burney and drummer Lance Morril . Everyone had already gained experience in other bands until they sat down together in a coffee shop owned by Burney and formed a band. According to Reddick, the reason for this was: “I want to start a band that's happy. Wouldn't it be cool to see a band and leave the club singing their songs, smiling and in a good mood? ".

They met for the first rehearsal on June 4, 1994, and just a month later the four of them had their first performance. Her first album Bowling for Soup was released on her own label Queso Records in September of the same year. The aim was to write honest, happy sing-along pieces with the motto "have a good time, all the time". Another album followed in 1996 with the name Cell Mates . In 2008, her song Today it's gonna be a great day became the theme song for the animated series Phineas and Ferb . Jaret Reddick has been lending his voice to the lead singer of Love Handel, Danny, since the first season.

A year later the public became aware of the newcomers, and pieces like Sandwich or Cody from the first album were played on the local radio station.

In 1998 her third album Rock On Honorable Ones was released! and another year later Tell Me When To Whoa! . The latter includes The Bitch Song , which was played so frequently on local radio station KDGE that it even left Marilyn Manson and Sugar Ray behind on the list of most played songs . In the same year Lance Morril left the band and was replaced by Gary Wiseman. As a single stand The Bitch Song but only with the release of the album Let's Do It For Johnny from 2000 in stores. This album contains new pieces as well as many revised tracks from previous albums and a cover version of Bryan Adams' hit Summer of '69 .

As early as 1997, some major record labels tried to sign Bowling for Soup. They decided in 2000 for the major label Jive Records , with which, among others, Britney Spears , * NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys are under contract. On the Warped Tour Bowling for Soup played as the opening act for blink-182 and Sum 41 , both of which are said to have had a great influence on them when it comes to the stage show.

On tour they wrote their next album again. This came on the market in 2002 with the name Drunk Enough To Dance , sold over 300,000 copies within a very short time and reached number 14 on the British album charts. With the single Girl All The Bad Guys Want they achieved their worldwide breakthrough and a Grammy nomination in the category Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals . The award went to No Doubt for Hey Baby . Girl All The Bad Guys Want is the most successful bowling-for-soup single to date and reached number 8 on the UK Singles Chart. With the single Emily one tried to build on this success. But this did not come close to the success of its predecessor. Since the album did not contain any other single-suitable pieces, a new one was written. The result was Punk Rock 101 and reached number 43 on the UK Singles Chart.

In 2004, the 16-track album A Hangover You Don't Deserve was released. It was number 23 of the Billboard Album - Charts claim for themselves, has now reached gold status, making it the most successful bowling-for-Soup album. It spawned the singles in 1985 and Almost .

The 2005 album Bowling for Soup Goes to the Movies contains cover versions of the soundtracks of TV series and films. The most famous cover is probably "... Baby One More Time", which can be heard in the movie Freaky Friday .

The Great Burrito Extortion Case followed in 2006 with the single High School Never Ends . When We Die and I'm Gay followed in 2007.

In 2007 Bowling for Soup also took part in the Download Festival in Donington Park , England .

The band's first live DVD was released in summer 2008 under the name Live and Very Attractive . It contains recordings of the UK Get Happy tour of concerts in England . The song My Wena was released on July 28, 2009 as a promotional single for the album Sorry For Partyin ' , which was released in October 2009. No Hablo Inglés was supposed to be the first official single, but the band split from their label Jive Records shortly after the release . Videos were made for both My Wena and No Hablo Inglés , but they never appeared as official singles.

On April 26, 2011, the eleventh album Fishin 'for Woos was released in Germany. The first single "SSS-Saturday" was released before the album on January 17, 2011 as a download on iTunes and as a stream on MySpace . The band stated that Turbulence would be the second single.

The studio album Lunch was released in September 2013 . Drunk. Love. The band stated that Circle would be the first single.
