East St. Louis (and 1861 Illinoistown ) is a city in St. Clair County in the west of the US -amerikanischen state of Illinois . In 2000, East St. Louis had 31,542 residents; by the official estimate in 2009, the population had decreased to 28,753.
East St. Louis was founded in 1797. It is located across from St. Louis ( Missouri ) on the east bank of the Mississippi River . The city is located in the Metro East called eastern, in Illinois and in the east of the Mississippi part of the metropolitan region of Greater St. Louis .
Economy and social structure
East St. Louis is one of the poorer cities in Illinois. A violent railroad strike broke out in 1877, followed by serious race riots in 1917 when an aluminum plant hired African Americans as strike breakers.
In the 1950s the city still had over 80,000 inhabitants. Today it is part of the Rust Belt . The decline in heavy industry since the 1960s caused high unemployment. The city's population is now largely (97.74%) of African-American descent.
