Leo Gooden
Leo Gooden ( 1929 - 1965 ) was an American soul , R&B and jazz singer , songwriter , record producer and club owner in East St. Louis .
Live and act
Gooden owned the Blue Note Club (4300 Missouri Avenue) in East St. Louis in the early 1960s . in which he appeared as a singer with his band Leo's Five . His house band included the Hammond organ player Don James, the drummer Kenny Rice and the tenor saxophonist Charles "Little Man" Wright, and at times also Fred Jackson , Hamiet Bluiett and Grant Green . Musicians like Redd Foxx , Yusef Lateef , Oliver Nelson and Lou Rawls also performed regularly at Gooden's nightclub.
During this time Gooden recorded several singles with standards such as Hi-Heel Sneakers, I'll Be Seeing You, Ol 'Man River and Darn That Dream as well as his own compositions such as Ugly, Ugly and Winkie-Do , as well as two LPs, on his own record label LG Records on. Oliver Nelson organized a recording session with strings ( Leo Sings With Strings ) for Leo Gooden in New York in 1963 and acted as arranger of numbers such as Pennies from Heaven , In My Solitude , Sophisticated Lady or Moon River . Gooden's singing style was influenced by Jimmy Scott and Billie Holiday . For Albert King he wrote the song COD (Coun-Tree 1006) in 1964 .
