The Gateway Geyser is a 192 meter high fountain in East St. Louis , Illinois . It is on the east bank of the Mississippi River across from the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial , which is on the west bank.

The Gateway Geyser was built as a scenic counterpoint to the Gateway Arch of the same height and is the third highest fountain in the world after the King Fahd's Fountain and the World Cup fountain. The fountain, completed by Hydro Dramatics in 1995, cost around 4 million US dollars and is powered by three 600 kW pumps. 50 liters of water are pumped up every second at a speed of 76 meters per second. The water jet develops a force of 460 kN . On June 17, 2005 ownership of the fountain and the 14 hectares surrounding park passed to Metro East Park and Recreation District . Since then, the park has served as the cornerstone of the Malcolm W. Martin Memorial Park , which opened in June 2009 and was named after the initiator of the Gateway Geyser. For the 40th anniversary of the Gateway Arch, the fountain was illuminated for the first time on October 28, 2005. In the spring of 2008, a 12-meter-high viewing platform was built near the fountain , which improves the view of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial and the skyline of St. Louis .

The Gateway Geyser is started four times a day between April and October (at 12 noon, 3 p.m., 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.).
