LaPhonso Darnell Ellis (born May 5, 1970 in East St. Louis , Illinois ) is a retired American basketball player . Ellis played in the NBA for 11 years .

Career

Ellis played four years for the University of Notre Dame , where he led the team to the 1992 NIT finals as the star player of the Fightin 'Irish . He quit college as the best shot blocker in team history. In the 1992 NBA draft , the Denver Nuggets selected him from 5th place. Ellis played a good rookie season , which he completed with 14.7 points, 9.1 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game and was appointed to the NBA All-Rookie First Team . In the 1994–95 season, Ellis suffered a serious injury that made him miss most of the season. Ellis also struggled with injuries in the years to come. He led the unsuccessful Nuggets in the 1996-97 season with 21.9 points per game as the top scorer. In 1998 he left the Nuggets and moved to the Atlanta Hawks , where he was an important part of the rotation. After another year with the Minnesota Timberwolves , Ellis moved to the Miami Heat in the summer of 2001 , where he ended his career in 2003. During his career, Ellis had a career average of 11.9 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game.

After his sports career, Ellis began a career as a college basketball analyst for sports broadcaster ESPN in 2009 .
