history
At the end of the 19th century, what is now Swansea was dominated by farmland and industry. The residents were always anxious for independence, so they opposed efforts to expand the city of Belleville to the northwest. So in December 1886 the independent community was founded as New Swansea and recognized by the state.
Demographic data
In the 2000 census, the population was 10,579. These were distributed over 3,937 households in 2,799 families. The population density was 961.0 / km². There were 4,102 residential buildings, which corresponded to a building density of 316.0 / km².
The population in 2000 was 88.0% White , 8.6% African American , 0.2% Native American , 1.6% Asian, and 0.4% other. 1.1% said they came from at least two of these groups. 1.5% of the population were Hispanics belonging to any of the above groups.
26.6% were under 18 years of age, 7.4% between 18 and 24, 29.6% between 25 and 44, 21.5% between 45 and 64 and 14.9% 65 and older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 women there were statistically 90.4 men, and 87.1 for those over 18 years of age.
