Croatian encyclopedia
The Croatian Encyclopedia ( Croatian Hrvatska enciklopedija ) is a Croatian encyclopedia that has been published by the Miroslav Krleža Lexicographical Institute since 1999 . An encyclopedia of the same name in the 1940s remained unfinished.
1st edition 1941–1945
The creation of the first Croatian encyclopedia began in Zagreb in the 1930s by the editor Mate Ujević . After the creation of Banovina Hrvatska , the project also received support from government agencies and the Catholic Church .
The articles were written by academics from the University of Zagreb and from other parts of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia . It was planned to have the encyclopedia appear in twelve volumes. The first volume appeared on February 10, 1941. Two months later, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia fell apart and the Independent State of Croatia was proclaimed. The fifth volume appeared in the spring of 1945 in the final phase of the state.
After the Tito partisans captured Zagreb , the fifth volume was largely destroyed and the staff interrupted their work on the project.
Many employees later participated in the Enciklopedija Jugoslavije and other encyclopedias of the Yugoslav Lexicographical Institute , which the Croatian writer Miroslav Krleža founded.
2nd edition 1999–2009
Since Croatia's independence in 1991, work has been done on completing the new Croatian encyclopedia. The Lexicographic Institute Miroslav Krleža published the 11-volume work between 1999 and 2009.
