The University of Zagreb ( Croatian Sveučilište u Zagrebu , Latin Universitas Studiorum Zagrabiensis ) is a state university in the Croatian capital Zagreb with around 70,000 students (as of 2019). It is the largest and oldest university in the country. The University of Zagreb is also a major research institution with a share of over 50 percent of nationwide university research.
history
academy
A Jesuit academy , the Neoacademia Zagrabiensis , was founded on September 23, 1669 by Emperor Leopold I in his capacity as King of Croatia .
After the dissolution of the Jesuit order by Pope Clement XIV in 1773, the academy (including its extensive library ) was given a new structure. In 1776, Empress Maria Theresa declared the facility to be the Royal Academy of Sciences (lat. Regia Scientiarum Academia ) with the faculties of philosophy , theology and law . The former political science subjects became part of the law faculty.
university
The structure of this academy was essentially retained until 1874. In 1861, the Roman Catholic Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer proposed the establishment of a university in Zagreb to the Croatian parliament , for which Emperor Franz Joseph I signed a decree in the same year and this was finally ratified by parliament on January 5, 1874. The opening ceremony took place on October 19, 1874. The university was the third in the Hungarian part of the Austro-Hungarian dual monarchy . Since then, over 200,000 students have graduated from the university and over 8,000 doctoral students have earned their doctorates .

On September 19, 2008, it became known that corrupt professors at the Faculty of Economics and Transport were giving good exam grades on a large scale against payment and that the entrance test could be illegally bypassed. The police responded with 100 searches and 21 arrests. Those arrested included Deša Mlikotin Tomić, Chairwoman of the Anti-Corruption Committee in the Croatian Parliament.
An earthquake on March 22, 2020 damaged buildings of the medical faculty and the law faculty.
International cooperation
In its strategic documents "Iskorak 2001" and "International mission and policy", the university has expressed its desire for international cooperation. In May 2005 the Senate adopted a strategic plan which shows the goals the university intends to achieve with this international collaboration. In May 2007 the Senate adopted a declaration that encourages international exchange programs.
