Damaged house in Zagreb

On March 22, 2020 at 6:24 a.m. local time , an earthquake struck Zagreb . It had a magnitude of 5.4 M w on the moment magnitude scale . The epicenter of the earthquake was a few kilometers north of the Croatian capital Zagreb , where severe damage occurred, especially in the old town. A 15-year-old girl died from his injuries, and 17 other people were seriously injured.

The magnitude of the quake is given by the European seismological research company European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) as 5.4 M w and by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) as 5.3 M w . The epicenter of the quake is located by EMSC about seven kilometers northeast of Zagreb, its hypocenter was ten kilometers deep. As oven operation a is deferment to a rejection of the northern Medvednica assumed -Störungszone.

It was the strongest earthquake in Croatia since 1996. It was widely reported that it was the strongest earthquake in Zagreb since the devastating earthquake of 1880 ; in fact, in 1905 and 1906 stronger earthquakes with magnitudes of 5.5 and 6.1 took place Richter scale .

There were several aftershocks; the strongest occurred at 7:01 am, 37 minutes after the main quake. It had loud EMSC a thickness of 5.0 m b , USGS is a magnitude of 4.6 M w of.

According to USGS estimates, the main quake was felt by nearly 1.4 million people with an intensity V on the Modified Mercalli Scale, including approximately 285,000 people who experienced intensity VII. It was noticed in numerous neighboring countries and the Austrian Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics received over 2000 earthquake reports. According to witnesses, the quake is said to have lasted over ten seconds.

Victims and damage

27 people were injured in the quake, 18 of them seriously. A 15-year-old died the next day from her head injuries.

There was severe damage to buildings, particularly in the old town of Zagreb. According to the city administration on March 28, more than 26,000 buildings were damaged in Zagreb, 1900 of which were unusable. This mainly affected old and / or poorly preserved buildings, on which most of the severe damage occurred. Buildings erected from 1964 (one year after the earthquake in Skopje) mostly got away with little or no damage, because from that year they had to comply with earthquake safety regulations for the first time in former Yugoslavia.

The stone top of the (scaffolded) south tower of the Roman Catholic cathedral in Zagreb broke off at a height of 92 m. Part of the ceiling of the Sacred Heart Basilica collapsed. In the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of Zagreb, built in 1866, the ceiling frescoes , which Nikolai Muchin only executed in 2007 , were badly damaged. The building of the Croatian Parliament was seriously damaged and part of the roof collapsed. The buildings and some exhibits of the Museum of Arts and Crafts and the Archaeological Museum were damaged. Of the buildings of the University of Zagreb , those of the medical and law faculties were particularly affected.

Cars were damaged by falling facade parts. The city's maternity hospital was evacuated and the mothers and newborns were moved to another hospital. In large parts of the city, the electricity and water supplies went out for hours. Several tram lines could not operate because debris blocked the rails and overhead lines were damaged.

Damage has also been reported from places in the vicinity of Zagreb. At Donja Stubica and Čučerje , the quake triggered landslides . The Krško nuclear power plant , located about 40 kilometers northwest of Zagreb in Slovenia , was not affected by the quake.

The quake hit the city and the surrounding area in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic , making contacts (e.g. visits to concerned relatives) and clean-up work difficult.

On April 22, 2020, Building Minister Predrag Štromar put the property damage at 42 billion kuna (around 5.5 billion euros ). This was the assessment made by experts from the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the University of Zagreb in collaboration with colleagues from other European countries.

Help

The Croatian Interior Ministry called on people who left their homes after the quake to keep their distance because of the coronavirus pandemic. The Red Cross distributed blankets to people who could not return to their homes. The civil protection authority organized a meal for those affected. Army soldiers helped clear the rubble.

Around 150 construction experts checked the security of the buildings concerned. For the people who could no longer return to their damaged houses, around 1,600 beds were made available as emergency accommodation on a campus, and more than 500 people use the offer. In addition, the civil defense set up tents for 500 people on a square in the city center.

Croatia activated the EU civil protection mechanism ; several EU states offered support. UNICEF supplied hygiene products for the homeless in the emergency shelters.
