Josip Zovko (born June 4, 1970 in Split , Yugoslavia , today Croatia ; † April 3, 2019 in Grudsko Vrilo , Bosnia and Herzegovina ) was a Croatian theater, television and film actor.

Live and act

Josip Zovko was born in Split and grew up in Berinovac, a village in the Lokvičići municipality , which belongs to the Imotska Krajina. He attended the Tin Ujević elementary school in Krivodol and then switched to the grammar school in Imotski , where he graduated from high school . He then completed a degree in electrical engineering . After a casting at the Croatian State Theater in Split (HNK Split), he was admitted to study the performing arts . He finished his studies with Izet Hajdarhodžić at the Academy of Performing Arts of the University of Zagreb .

He joined the ensemble of the Croatian State Theater in Split in 1993 and worked as an actor for film and television. After his engagements in film and television, he turned back to theater work at the HNK Split. He directed the performance of the play "Priredba" (German: Presentation) by Ilija Zovko .

He also moderated some events of the Croatian radio station Hrvatska Radiotelevizija (HRT) and in 2014 opened the Split Festival ( Splitsko ljeto ) in the role of mayor from 1893, "Gajo Bulat".

On April 3, 2019, Zovko had an accident in a traffic accident on the M6 ​​in the town of Grutsko Vrilo near Grude . He was buried in the Sveti Ante cemetery in Lokvičići with great public sympathy. A memorandum was held at the HNK Split in honor of the artist .

Theater roles

Already during his student days Zovko took part in theater performances like Helena von Euripides . In 1993 he joined the company of the Croatian State Theater in Split. He played various roles in the works of William Shakespeare , particularly in his later tragedies such as Hamlet (1994); he played the French king in King Lear (1997), “Prince Escalus” in Romeo and Juliet (2012), the painter in Timon of Athens (2013) and “Tubal” in The Merchant of Venice (2016).

In 2005 he played "Hank" in The Night of the Iguana by Tennessee Williams and in 2006 "Hamlet" in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead by Tom Stoppard . In 2011, he assumed the role of "Howard Wagner" in Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller .

Zovko was cast for more than 50 roles at the HNK Split and has made guest appearances with this theater in Dubrovnik , Sarajevo , Ljubljana , Belgrade and Skopje, among others .

Movie and TV

In the film "Da mi je biti morski pas" (Let me be a shark) from 1999, which received several awards at the 46th Pula Film Festival , Zovko played the leading role of the young "Mate". The series "Naši i vaši", which ran from 2000 to 2002 at Hrvatska Radiotelevizija (HRT), made him known beyond national borders.

In the 2001 film "Ante se vraća kući" (Ante returns home), he played the main role of "Kole". In the film “Posljedna Volja” (The Last Will) from 2001 with Goran Višnjić as the main actor, he appeared in the role of a ship waiter . In the 2004 film “Oprosit za kung fu” (Sorry For Kung Fu), which won a prize at the 21st Warsaw International Film Festival , he played the supporting role of the war veteran “Ćaćo”.

Zovko achieved international fame through the films by director Ognjen Sviličić. All series and films in which Zovko participated were produced and broadcast by the Croatian television HRT. Croatia Records subsequently released the films on DVD.
