Milan Begović

Milan Begović (born January 19, 1876 in Vrlika , † May 13, 1948 in Zagreb ) was a Croatian writer and dramaturge .

Life

Begović attended elementary school in Vrlika and grammar school in Split (1888-1894). He then studied at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Zagreb 1894-1896 and Vienna 1897-1903, where he graduated in Slavic and Romance studies. Also active as an assistant teacher in Split and Zadar . In 1909 he began as a trainee at the Hamburg Deutsches Schauspielhaus and in 1910 as a dramaturge . He also worked at the theater academy . In 1912 Begović was dramaturge and director at the Neue Wiener Bühne in Vienna and in 1913 at the Srpsko narodno pozorište inNovi Sad . During the First World War he lived in Vienna, then from 1920 in Zagreb, although he made many trips through Europe. In 1927 he became head of the Drama Theater , in 1929 he was transferred to high school, and in 1932 he retired. Since 1936 he was a corresponding member of the academy.

After his death he was buried in the Mirogoj cemetery in Zagreb .

Works

Begović worked in all genres of poetry, but his particular love was the theater. As a playwright he was also known in the West and performed on stages abroad. Western influence can also be felt in his other works ( Ibsen , Pirandello ). Frequent psychological problems in his work also reveal the influence of Sigmund Freud . He sometimes used pseudonyms like Tugomir Cetinski, Xeres de la Maraja or Stanko Dušić. Begović translated numerous dramas from world literature into Serbo-Croatian.
