Jakov Gotovac
Jakov Gotovac (born October 11, 1895 in Split , Austria-Hungary , † October 16, 1982 in Zagreb , SFR Yugoslavia ) was a Croatian composer and conductor .
Life
Jakov Gotovac first studied in Split with Antun Dobronić , Josip Hatze and Cyril Metoděj Hrazdíra , and since 1920 with Joseph Marx in Vienna . In 1922 he worked in the Philharmonic Society in Šibenik and conducted from 1923 to 1958 at the Croatian National Theater in Zagreb . In addition, he directed several choirs, including the Mladost-Balkan student choir and the Vladimir Nazor choir .
Gotovac was one of the first representatives of a Croatian late romantic national style. His vocal works are often based on folk poetry texts; although he rarely used original folk music , his musical language is strongly influenced by folklore. His greatest success was the opera Ero der Schelm , which premiered in 1935 and was re-enacted in more than 80 European theaters. Gotovac created exclusively vocal and orchestral works.
Gotovac is buried in the Mirogoj cemetery in Zagreb .
