The Croatian National Theater ( Croatian Hrvatsko Narodno Kazalište , HNK ) is located in the Croatian capital Zagreb .

It was founded in 1840 and sponsored by government agencies together with other Croatian national theaters. In 1870 a national opera company was founded. Croatian national theaters were also built in the cities of Split , Rijeka , Osijek and Varaždin .

In 1895, the theater moved into the building that has been used to this day. The Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Joseph I (Austria-Hungary) also took part in the inauguration of the new magnificent building.

The building was designed by the Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer (see Fellner & Helmer office ), who were responsible for numerous theaters throughout Europe. The Zagreb theater is largely identical to the Zurich Opera House (1891) and the Court Theater in Wiesbaden, built in 1892/94, today the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden .

Some of the most important Croatian artists worked in this theater: Ivan Zajc was the first theater director. Jakov Gotovac directed the opera from 1923 to 1958. The important Croatian director Branko Gavella began their careers there , as did the first Croatian prima ballerina Mia Čorak Slavenska and the internationally known mezzo-soprano Dunja Vejzovic .

The following internationally known artists have performed in the theater: Franz Liszt , Sarah Bernhardt , Franz Lehár , Richard Strauss , Gérard Philipe , Vivien Leigh , Laurence Olivier , Jean-Louis Barrault , Peter Brook , Mario del Monaco and many others.
