Zajc first attended the music school in Rijeka before studying at the Conservatory in Milan from 1850 to 1855 . After the death of his parents, Zajc returned to his hometown in 1855, where he accepted a position as conductor and concertmaster, taught string instruments at the Philharmonic Institute there and wrote a number of compositions in his typical tempi. After Zajc had a great success with his opera Amelia ossia Il Bandito in 1860 , he decided in 1862 to go to Vienna , where a flourishing theater and opera landscape existed at that time. There he became very popular because of his operettas The Boy on the Boat ( 1863 ) and The Witch of Boisy ( 1866 ).

He lived in the time of the Illyrian movement , which influenced him and made him an ardent patriot . He wanted nothing more than the unification of the five Croatian counties, which were under different rule, and the liberation of Croatia from Austria-Hungary . He processed all of these feelings in his operas Mislav ( 1870 ), Ban Leget ( 1872 ), Nikola Šubić-Zrinjski ( 1876 ) and Lizinka ( 1878 ). He has also received numerous works for solo voice, for choir , orchestra , piano and an oratorio . After his death he was buried in the Mirogoj cemetery in Zagreb .
