Hrvatska radiotelevizija ( HRT ; German Croatian Broadcasting ) is the public broadcasting company in Croatia with its headquarters in Zagreb . It operates three national radio stations, eight regional radio stations, one international radio station and four television stations. The company consists of the parts Hrvatski radio (radio), Hrvatska televizija (television), Multimedija (multimedia services) and Glazbena proizvodnja (music productions).
The legal basis is the Croatian Radio and Television Act. The company is controlled by its own program council. This eleven-member body first met on November 14, 2003. The members of the program council are elected by the Croatian parliament . The council also appoints the director for a term of four years.
history
The idea for its own Croatian radio was born in 1924 within a group of respected Zagreb intellectuals and business people who organized themselves in the Zagreb Radio Club . The radio club had 136 members. After two years of efforts, the club was granted all the necessary licenses and government permits and Radio Zagreb, HRT's predecessor, was able to be founded. Broadcasting began on May 15, 1926 at 8:30 p.m. with the Croatian anthem . Radio Zagreb was the first radio station in Southeast Europe. While initially only 50 listeners listened in, by the end of the first year of broadcasting there were already over 4,000. In 1928 Radio Zagreb became a full member of the Union Internationale de Radiodifusion (UIR) in Geneva as the representative of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia . At that time there were still no other broadcasters in the entire SHS state or in any of the other states of Southeast Europe. For the first 14 years, the station was privately organized before it was nationalized by the Croatian Banish . On April 10, 1941, the establishment of the Independent State of Croatia (NDH) was announced on Radio Zagreb . During the time of the NDH, Radio Zagreb became the basis for the newly founded radio station chain Hrvatski krugoval . As a result, Radio Zagreb was renamed Državna krugovalna postaja Zagreb .
After the end of the Second World War the station was renamed Radio Zagreb again and Hrvatski krugoval was dissolved. In 1952 the Croatian broadcasting corporation, while Croatia was part of the SFR Yugoslavia , was established in the course of the organization of the Yugoslav broadcasting under the name Radiotelevizija Zagreb together with the other broadcasting corporations of Yugoslavia such as B. Radiotelevizija Ljubljana (today RTV SLO ) and Radiotelevizija Beograd (today Radio-Televizija Srbije (RTS)) integrated into the Yugoslav radio system Jugoslovenska radiotelevizija (JRT) (see radio and television in Yugoslavia ). On May 15, 1956, thirty years after the broadcast began, television programs began to be broadcast. For this purpose , a transmitter was installed on the Sljeme mountain , in the immediate vicinity of the capital. Color television was introduced exactly 10 years later . TVZ's second program was introduced on August 27, 1972, and the third program followed in 1988. On April 30, 1990, teletext was introduced as a permanent service on all of the company's channels.
In the course of preparations for Croatia's independence, Radiotelevizija Zagreb was renamed Hrvatska radiotelevizija (HRT) on June 29, 1990 by decision of the Croatian Parliament . HRT was transformed from a state to a public institution. During the Croatian War, the buildings of the broadcasting company and transmission systems, which were strategically important targets, were heavily bombed and severely damaged, so that transmissions were sometimes only possible under restricted conditions (e.g. lower transmission power from reserve transmission systems). The HRT is financed today from license fees (78 HRK / Kuna per month), advertising and service income.

satellite
All radio and television programs of the Croatian Broadcasting Company can also be received via satellite. They are broadcast across Europe via Eutelsat 16A, although for legal reasons only the radio programs, HRT 4 and in-house productions are transmitted unencrypted. A smart card ( Viaccess encoding) is required for complete decryption of all television channels , which can be ordered and extended every 365 days for a fee. There is also the possibility of the channels in the Croatian pay TV offers such. B. iskon, MaxTV and TotalTV to watch completely decrypted.
There are also official streams of all free-to-air channels and broadcasts.
Slika Hrvatske
HRT sees itself as an important medium for the Croatian diaspora , which is spread across Europe, North and South America and Australia. For this, the own television program Slika Hrvatske (picture of Croatia) was produced, which ran between 02:00 and 10:00 (CET) on the then HRT Plus (today HRT 3). Due to the airtime, it was designed more for the non-European diaspora and was therefore of little importance in Europe. In January 2013, Slika Hrvatske was unexpectedly dismissed.
competitor
In the early 1990s, private television stations also began to establish themselves on the Croatian market (including Nova TV ). In 2004, by decision of the Croatian government, the terrestrial broadcasting chain of the third television channel of national television was privatized. The broadcaster RTL Televizija , which has been broadcasting on the frequencies of what was then the third program, was awarded the contract. Today, also due to the liberalization of the Croatian television market, the variety of television channels in Croatia is greater than in the past and offers a steadily growing selection of channels in recent years (e.g. Doma TV, RTL 2, VOX TV, CMC). Nevertheless, pay-TV remains very popular in Croatia, as it almost exclusively offers a selection of Croatian channels, which covers most of the branches and regions.
Others
- The HRT has its own tamburica, jazz and symphony orchestras as well as a choir.
- In the Croatian War 1991–1995, 14 HRT reporters and technicians were killed.
- From March 28, 2004 to September 15, 2012, the station name of HRT3 was HRT Plus and almost exclusively showed older documentaries from our own production. It was only available via satellite and only broadcast its regular program during the day. Before the name was changed, the broadcast started under its current name in 1993.
- HRT4 went on air on December 24, 2012.
- All HRT TV channels are now available via DVB-T throughout Croatia and via DVB-S in large parts of the world. They are also fed into the networks of Croatian pay-TV providers.
