Televiziunea Română (TVR) is the public television company in Romania . It was founded in Bucharest in 1956.

TVR broadcasts the television programs TVR 1 (since 1956) and TVR 2 (since 1968). In 1995 the foreign service TVR International started . TVR HD started in 2008 with the first broadcasts in HDTV. TVR 3 , which shows programs from TVR regional studios, and TVR Info ( TVR News since 2012 ) as well as TVR Cultural , which broadcasts cultural programs and was discontinued in 2012, also started in 2008 .

The television station was a member of the European Broadcasting Union until the beginning of 2016 . The broadcaster can no longer meet its financial obligations and was expelled from the association with CHF 16 million  . According to the EBU, the default dates back to January 2007. There is a risk of bankruptcy that could allow the broadcaster to restructure.
