Port-Cartier is a city in the province of Quebec in Canada .
It is located on the northwest bank of the Saint Lawrence River , about 620 km from the city of Québec . The ferry crossing over the Gulf of St. Lawrence takes about two hours. The capital of the administrative region Côte-Nord has around 7,000 inhabitants (as of 2011) in two districts, which are separated by the mouth of the two rivers Rivière aux Rochers and Rivière Dominique .
history
The area around Port-Cartier was discovered by the French navigator Jacques Cartier in the mid-16th century . The systematic exploration was not carried out until 1603 by Samuel de Champlain . The city itself was founded in 1915 under the name Shelter Bay by Robert R. McCormick , then owner of the Chicago Tribune . From 1916 there was a post office. In 1958, a settlement with an iron ore processing plant and loading port was built east of Shelter Bay. In 1959 the two districts were officially united and renamed Port-Cartier.
population
More than 98 percent of the city's population is French-speaking.
Economy and tourism
Originally the local economy was based on logging and processing. Wood processing was discontinued in 1963 due to the fact that resources had also been reduced by a major forest fire in 1955. The main source of income since 1958 was the Québec Cartier Mining Company . The company was acquired in 2007 and renamed Arcelor Mittal Mines of Canada in 2008 . Iron ore delivered from Fermont over a 420-kilometer railway line is processed into pellets , stored and shipped. The port, which can be used all year round, is one of the largest in Canada with a capacity of over 20 million tons per year. Grain is also exported through the port.
Port-Cartier is surrounded by a lot of unspoiled nature in the Canadian state property, in which animals such as black bear , elk , wolf , bald eagle , Canada goose , lynx , caribou , elk , whale and various game fish live in the wild. Fishing , outdoor activities, snowshoeing hiking and skiing are all available to tourists . The snow depth is up to 2 meters in winter.
