Latvijas Televīzija (short: LTV , German : Latvian television ) is the state-owned public television company in Latvia .
financing
About 60% of the company is financed by state contributions and the remainder is generated through advertising income. The introduction of a license fee has been discussed in Latvia for a long time, but has so far been repeatedly rejected by the governments. Media analysts see the reason for this in a possible loss of influence and control for the respective government.
history
LTV began operations on November 6, 1954, and in 1974 began broadcasting color television, initially in SÉCAM , and from 1998 in PAL .
In 1993 the company joined the European Broadcasting Union . As a result, Latvia took part in the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time in 2000 , which it won in 2002 . Thus the competition was organized by LTV in Riga the following year .
In 2006 LTV hosted the Ice Hockey World Championship .
As part of the 2012 Summer Olympics , LTV7 switched from 4: 3 to 16: 9 widescreen on July 26, 2012 . LTV1 has also been broadcasting in this format since January 15, 2013 .
On December 23, 2012 there was a live broadcast in HD image quality from the Latvian National Opera for the first time .
Since June 1, 2013 , LTV1 and LTV7 have broadcast a 24-hour program. This decision was made in order to provide a more dynamic program for all population groups. At night, mainly LTV's most popular programs are shown repeatedly.
The streaming service LSM Replay was introduced in November 2015. All programs from LTV and the other public broadcaster, Latvijas Radio, can be accessed here. The programs can be accessed practically anywhere in the world, provided they were produced by LTV or LR. In addition, all public broadcasters from LTV and LR can be streamed live via LSM Replay.
Since March 2016 there has been a third LTV TV channel, VISIEMLTV.LV. The target group of VISIEMLTV.LV are mainly Latvians who live abroad. As these LTV1 and LTV7 cannot be accessed outside Latvia for legal reasons, VISIEMLTV.LV was launched. The station shows its own news, series, documentaries and films 24 hours a day. VISIEMLTV.LV can be received via the LSM Replay streaming service.
TV channel
LTV operates three television channels, LTV1 in Latvian , the more youth-oriented LTV7 in Latvian and Russian and VISIEMLTV.LV for Latvians living abroad. LTV1 and LTV7 are available via satellite in the pay TV package of the Scandinavian provider Viasat at the satellite position 5 ° East ( Sirius 4) , which can also be received in Central Europe. VISIEMLTV.LV can be viewed exclusively via the own streaming service of the public broadcasters in Latvia, LSM Replay.
