Radio France is the French public radio broadcaster .

history

Maison de Radio France , the headquarters of Radio France in Paris

Radio France emerged from the smashing of the Office de Radiodiffusion Télévision Française (ORTF) when the uniform carrier for public television and radio in France was dissolved by law at the turn of 1974/1975. On January 1, 1975, the newly founded station took over the three major radio programs France Inter , France Culture , France Musique and the ten regional FIP waves.

The international broadcasting under the name International Radio France (RFI) also re-established either themselves, but with a lasting several years delay. RFI initially became Radio France's “fifth program”. Since 1982 RFI existed as a subsidiary of the Radio France group, from 1987 the station became independent.

Radio France has been based in the spacious broadcasting company Maison de Radio France in the 16th arrondissement of Paris since it was founded .

Two new programs were introduced in 1980: Radio Bleue , a program for the older generation that originally only broadcast on medium wave, and the youth program Radio 7 . In addition, three local radio stations went on air this year: Fréquence Nord (May 19), Radio Mayenne (June 16) and Melun FM (September 11). Radio Bleue and the local radio stations were developed into the network of regional radio stations France Bleu in September 2000 .

The news program France Info first aired in 1987. It was the first information radio to broadcast around the clock. Since then there has been a point sur l'info every 30 minutes in which the current news is summarized. There were also sections on selected topics.

From 1989 the music program Hector , an offshoot of the classical program France Musique and Victor , was broadcast digitally by France Culture Europe via the TDF 1 satellite.

The traffic radio 107.7 FM began on a single- frequency network in cooperation with the motorway operator SANEF . It is the only non-private French traffic broadcaster that reports on the situation on the motorways in northern France around the clock.

Since 1996 there is a database under the name Sophia with contributions that other free and commercial radio providers can take over. In the same year the program Elisa started broadcasting , which only brings French chansons. It was broadcast in analogue and digital format, including the bouquet of nine stations broadcast by Radio France on CanalSatellite .

The youth program Le Mouv ' was founded in 1997. It was only broadcast digitally, initially from Toulouse and since 2001 from Paris.

From September 2002 to 2006 Radio France operated a city radio for Paris under the name La City Radio de Paris on the frequency 107.1 MHz. It was integrated into the France Bleu program under the name France Bleu Ile de France .

Podcasts from broadcasts have been available since 2006. In the same year the France Vivace program was launched, broadcasting classical music around the clock via cable, satellite and the Internet. It replaced the Hector program . The night program was taken over on France Musique . At the end of August 2010, France Vivace was discontinued as part of a program reform.

Radio France has also been broadcasting on DAB ( French Radio numérique terrestre , RNT) since 2007 .

On October 31, 2014, Radio France had to cancel the broadcast due to an incident at the Maison de Radio France , as smoke and flames had been noticed in the building. Before the broadcast was canceled, Radio France informed the audience: "Ladies and gentlemen, we have to inform you that we are forced to cancel the broadcast due to a fire in the broadcasting house and to evacuate ourselves together with the entire editorial team. We hope that we will start our program again as soon as possible. "

On January 1, 2016, between 0:15 and 1:15 a.m., Radio France switched off almost all medium-wave stations that broadcast the France Info and France Bleu programs to save money. The transmitters Lyon on 603 kHz and Rennes on 711 kHz will remain in operation for the time being. In the case of the station Lyon, this is due to the broadcast of the “Radio Fair for the Sick” of the Diocese of Lyon on January 3, 2016, and on January 4, 2016 at 0:30 this frequency was also switched off. The Rennes transmitter was switched off by a technician on January 2, 2016 at 10 a.m. because it could only be switched off remotely along with the cooling system. In order to avoid a possible fire due to the lack of cooling, it was decided to switch the Rennes transmitter on again and to switch it off manually on site the following day.

Companies

Like all French radio stations, Radio France is operated in the legal form of a publicly owned public limited company ( société anonyme à capitaux publics ). The sole shareholder is the French state. The company is operated in the public interest as a public service, which in German law is comparable to services of general interest with which the state fulfills an infrastructure contract .

At the top is an intendant ( President-Directeur général ), who manages the company and legally represents it to third parties. In this respect, he is comparable to the artistic director of a German broadcasting corporation, although he is not elected by a college like his German counterpart, but appointed by the French President on the proposal of the broadcasting supervisory authority, the Conseil supérieur de l'audiovisuel (CSA) . The directors of Radio France have so far been in chronological order:

  • Jacqueline Baudrier, from January 1975 to July 1981
  • Michèle Cotta, from July 1981 to August 1982
  • Jean-Noël Jeanneney, from October 1982 to December 1986
  • Roland Faure, from December 1986 to January 1989
  • Jean Maheu, from February 1989 to November 1995
  • Michel Boyon, from November 1995 to November 1998
  • Jean-Marie Cavada, from November 1998 to April 2004
  • Jean-Paul Cluzel, from May 2004 to May 2009
  • Jean-Luc Hees, from May 2009 to May 2014
  • Mathieu Gallet, since May 2014

Another organ of the station is the Administrative Council ( conseil d'administration de Radio France , CA), which consists of twelve members: the director of Radio France, four members of the CSA, four representatives of the French state, two members of the French parliament and two representatives of the Radio France workforce.

Radio France had around 4,300 employees in 2012, 42 percent of whom were women.

The station's budget in 2011 totaled 652.4 million euros. Financing is provided through license fees .

Radio France also has interests in other broadcasters. Radio France owns 15 percent of the shares in ARTE France, the French co-partner of the Franco-German cultural broadcaster ARTE . Radio France also operates the traffic information program 107.7 FM ( Autoroute Info ) in cooperation with the motorway operator SANEF .

Sound body

Radio France maintains several orchestras that enrich the musical life of France and also play an important role in the programs. The best known is the Orchester National de France , which has existed since 1934. There is also the Orchester Philharmonique de Radio France and the radio choir Chœur de Radio France and the children's choir Maîtrise de Radio France . There are special concert series with well-known artists.
