The Maison de la Radio

The Maison de la Radio ( Radio House ) is a building in the 16th arrondissement of Paris , on Avenue du President Kennedy, on the eastern His -Ufer. It was designed by the architect Henry Bernard and has been home to the public radio station Radio France since 1975 .

history

The building was officially opened on December 14, 1963 by the then French President Charles de Gaulle and his Minister of Culture, André Malraux . Its task was to bring together under one roof the (state) radio and television production facilities that were previously scattered across Paris. So it was first the seat of the ORTF , which was founded on the model of the BBC, and from 1975 Radio France .

The Maison de la Radio consists of a 500-meter-long ring of buildings, which is grouped around a central building with a 68-meter-high tower. The layout inspired the older Radio France logos . The building became the model for similar radio structures in Europe, such as the ORF regional studios in Austria that were built between 1968 and 1972. The focus is on functionality, but above all the house should be a "friend of sound" and an "enemy of noise". The studios were therefore relocated to the center of the complex to protect them from outside noise. The archive rooms are housed in the rectangular tower, which according to the original draft was supposed to reach a height of 100 meters, but was shortened due to urban planning concerns.

The Maison de la Radio offers numerous cultural projects (in particular concerts, including live broadcasts, visits, family workshops and demonstrations). After a long renovation period, the large hall was reopened in 2014 as Studio 104 with 1,461 seats, designed by AS Architecture Studio, which won the competition for the complete renovation of the Maison de la Radio in 2005.

organ

The large organ in the large broadcasting hall of Radio France was built in 2013 by the organ builder Gerhard Grenzing (Barcelona). The instrument has 100 registers on six manual works, playable on four manuals and pedal .
