Hrvoje Šarinić (born February 17, 1935 in Sušak , Yugoslavia , † July 21, 2017 in Zagreb ) was a Croatian politician and Prime Minister.

biography

Family background

Hrvoje Šarinić was the son of Marijan and Vila. The father was the mayor of Sušak and a member of the Croatian Peasant Party . When Hrvoje was nine years old, his father died or, according to official information, committed suicide . An autopsy was not carried out. In 1945 he was posthumously declared an enemy of the people ( narodni neprijatelj ) and the family's property was confiscated .

education

At the time of the Italian occupation he attended an Italian elementary school and graduated from high school in Sušak. Šarinić graduated from the Faculty of Architecture and Building Surveying at the University of Zagreb in 1962 . In 1963 he received a three-month scholarship for France , where he went with his pregnant wife Erika.

Time abroad

Šarinić worked for several years in France , South Africa and Morocco . He also received the French Legion of Honor . Hrvoje was the manager of the expansion of the nuclear power plant in Bordeaux . The biggest business he ran was building two power plants in South Africa in 1974; he stayed there for six years. Šarinić also worked for the French army and got French citizenship. In the early 1980s he returned to Croatia, more precisely Zagreb, and became the director of the representation of the French nuclear industry. In 1983 he went to Casablanca in Morocco and was the general director of the largest local construction company. He stayed that way until his retirement in 1983 and returned to Zagreb. He bought several houses all over Croatia, including one near Bol on the island of Brač .

Political career

Šarinić entered politics in 1989. In a letter containing his biography, he made himself available to Franjo Tuđman . Until the elections, Hrvoje Šarinić did administrative work in the Croatian Democratic Union .

After Croatia's independence, Šarinić became a close associate of Franjo Tuđmans, who appointed him head of the office of the President of the Republic (1990-1992). He then became Prime Minister between 1992 and 1993. Thereafter, Hrvoje became an advisor to the President and head of the National Security Bureau

He was considered the closest confidante of the first Croatian President Franjo Tudman.

On July 21, 2017, Šarinić died after a long and serious illness.
