The Yugoslav Lexicographic Institute ( Serbo-Croatian Jugoslavenski leksikografski zavod ) was the national lexicographic institute of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia .

After the fall of Yugoslavia, it was renamed the " Miroslav Krleža Lexicographical Institute " ( Leksikografski zavod "Miroslav Krleža" ), which became the national lexicographical institute of Croatia .

history

The institute was founded in 1950 under the name “Lexicographical Institute of the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia” ( Leksikografski zavod FNRJ ) and renamed “Yugoslavian Lexicographical Institute” ( Jugoslavenski leksikografski zavod ) in 1964 . The institute was headed by Miroslav Krleža , with Mate Ujević as editor-in-chief. The institute was based in Zagreb and had branches in Ljubljana and Belgrade .

After Krleža's death in 1981, the institute was renamed the "Yugoslavian Lexicographic Institute 'Miroslav Krleža'" ( Jugoslavenski leksikografski zavod "Miroslav Krleža" ).

Publications

The Yugoslav Lexicographical Institute employed numerous scientists from all disciplines and, in addition to general and subject-specific reference works, also published maps and travel guides. Some notable works begun or completed by the institute are:

  • Opća enciklopedija (General Encyclopedia, 1st edition, 10 volumes, 1955–1964; 2nd edition, 6 volumes, 1966–1969; 3rd edition, 8 volumes, 1977–1982)
  • Šumarska enciklopedija (Encyclopedia of Forestry, 3 volumes, 1980–1987)
  • Hrvatski biografski leksikon (Croatian Biographical Lexicon, since 1983, 8 volumes published so far, up to the letter Li )
  • Leksikon jugoslavenske muzike (Lexicon of the Music of Yugoslavia , 2 volumes, 1984)
  • Filmska enciklopedija (Encyclopedia of Films, 2 volumes, 1986–1990)
  • Bibliografija rasprava, članaka i književnih radova (Bibliography of treatises, articles and literary works, 14 volumes, 1956–1986)
