Jackie Joyner-Kersee (born March 3, 1962 in East St. Louis , Illinois ) is a former American long jumper and heptathlete . She is a three-time Olympic champion and four-time world champion.

Career

Joyner-Kersee won a total of 6 medals at the Olympic Games : 1988 gold in the heptathlon and long jump, 1992 gold in the heptathlon, plus a silver medal in the heptathlon in 1984 and two bronze medals in the long jump (1992 and 1996 ). She was also world champion four times , twice in the heptathlon ( 1987 and 1993 ) and in the long jump (1987 and 1991 ).

She was the first female athlete to exceed 7,000 points in the heptathlon, in 1986 during the Goodwill Games . Her 7291 points, achieved in 1988, are still a world record today . In addition, the five best performances in the heptathlon were ever achieved by her. To date, Jackie Joyner-Kersee was the best 200-meter runner in a heptathlon (22.30 seconds in Indianapolis) and the best long jumper in a heptathlon (7.27 meters in 1988 in Seoul).

Jackie Joyner-Kersee married her trainer Bob Kersee on January 11, 1986 , her sister-in-law was Florence Griffith-Joyner . Her brother Al Joyner is also a former outstanding athlete as a triple jumper .

In 1987 Joyner-Kersee was honored with the Associated Press Sportsman of the Year award . In 2012 she was inducted into the IAAF Hall of Fame .
