Katarina Mary Johnson-Thompson (born January 9, 1993 in Liverpool , England ) is a British athlete who competes in both the heptathlon and the long jump and high jump . Johnson-Thompson is multiple British champion in high and long jump and also a very good 200 and 800 meter runner. She manages to more than compensate for her very poor throwing performance with her outstanding jumping and running performance. She is the British high jump record holder and for a time also held the British long jump records.

Athletic career

In 2009 Katarina Johnson-Thompson took part in the Youth World Championships in Brixen and won the gold medal in the heptathlon there. At the Junior European Championships a few weeks later in Novi Sad , she was eighth in the heptathlon. In 2010 she was almost unable to compete due to an ankle injury. In 2011 she again took part in the Junior European Championships and finished sixth there. At the Multistarmeting in Kladno in 2012, she exceeded the 6000 point mark for the first time and qualified with the B-Standard for the Olympic Games in London . She finished in 14th place . This year she also won the gold medal in the long jump at the Junior World Championships in Barcelona with 6.81 meters.

In 2013 she again won a gold medal in the heptathlon at the U23 European Championships in Tampere with 6215 points and thus secured a ticket for the World Championships in Moscow , which she finished in fifth place. In 2014 she won the silver medal in the long jump with 6.81 meters at the World Indoor Championships in Sopot, Poland . She also won the Hypomeeting in Götzis with 6682 points. In 2015 she won the gold medal in the pentathlon at the European Indoor Championships in Prague with a new British record of 5000 points. She missed the world record of the Ukrainian Natalja Dobrynska by just thirteen points. She was therefore a co-favorite for the World Championships in Beijing . However, in the heptathlon in the long jump - her strongest discipline - she did not make a valid attempt and therefore finished the competition in 28th place. In the long jump, however, she qualified for the final and finished eleventh there. In 2016 she finished sixth in the heptathlon at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . In 2017 she improved her personal best at the Hypomeeting in Götzis to 6691 points and took fourth place in a high-class field and qualified for the World Championships in London. There she finished fifth in both the heptathlon (6658 points) and the high jump (1.95 meters).

At the 2018 World Indoor Athletics Championships in Birmingham , Johnson-Thompson won the gold medal in the pentathlon on March 2. She celebrated her next victory in April in the heptathlon at the Commonwealth Games in the Australian Gold Coast . In August, she increased her personal best at the European Championships in Berlin to 6759 points, securing the silver medal behind Belgian Nafissatou Thiam . The European Athletics Indoor Championships in 2019 in Glasgow , Johnson-Thompson secured her second indoor European title in the pentathlon. With 4983 points, she was over 250 points ahead of her countrywoman Niamh Emerson . At the beginning of October Johnson-Thompson won the World Championships in Doha with a new British record of 6981 points, improving Jessica Ennis-Hill's record by almost thirty points. With top performances over the hurdles, in the shot put and javelin throw as well as over 800 meters, she surprisingly prevailed against the favorite Nafissatou Thiam from Belgium and is sixth on the all-time world best list with her performance,

In 2014 Johnson-Thompson became British champion in the long jump outdoors and in 2014, 2018 and 2019 also indoors. In 2014 and 2015 she also secured the high jump titles in the hall.
