The 6th World Athletics Championships took place from July 8th to 12th, 2009 in Italy in the South Tyrolean city ​​of Brixen (Italian: Bressanone ).

A new record was set with 46 nations winning at least one medal, 9 of which made it onto the podium for the first time at a youth world championship.
